I'm also using Limitless right after (ISP off, two bands active) just to catch errant peaks.Jan 02, 2018. I've generally been moving between PA Lindell 354, Invisible G2 in Through mode, Townhouse or Iron on mixes lately depending on the projects needs (working on a crazy diverse variety of projects), but for this I wanted the comp to be as invisible as possible and Kotelnikov took the cake, really actually the first project it's ever stayed on the mix bus for me. It def looks cool and has some solid people behind it, I demoed it and shot it out against this Kotelnikov GE at the early stages of a mix and couldn't get Unisum to beat the Kotelnikov in Insane mode, i much preferred the movement and the tone of the TDR comp to Unisum for this particular project, which is a live acoustic band doing very vibey, Middle Eastern sounding Jewish worship music with a bunch of singers. but give it 12-18 months and maybe those same people will have moved on? How can a company come out of nowhere and turn so many heads? What is the background of the developers - are there any well-knowns in the team? Excuse me for not doing my homework or just demo'ing it for myself.I'm with you on this, feeling a touch of hype-burn over this Unisum.

Sometimes I get caught up in the hype wave and think "It MUST be good - I HAVE to get it". It's also part of 'my sound' so I don't like to mix/match all the time even if technically a different comp may more easily suit a song better, I prefer to work at my sound and keep it cohesive through a project with similar tools.įor me, having tried nearly every bus comp out there, I'm happy with how townhouse sounds and how it pulls things together without damage, it has a vibe that just works for most of the stuff I mix (indie/alt rock/pop) I prefer VCA sound on my mix bus for the gluing/cohesive pull. Vertigo is a nice alternative but doesn't get the go ahead like Townhouse does most times. I use SPL IRON (M/S mode in parallel mode at 75% mix) further down the chain in a pseudo 'mastering' capacity, along with some plugs (IK tapes, black box HG2, DBax for any overall mix eq etc) so Townhouse only plays a small but vital role in the overall sound of the mix. I'll automate the threshold to back off in the loud parts (so it doesn't compress MORE there than in the verses which will actually remove impact of the big parts), slow attack, fast release.

The way I use it (always on from the start on the mix bus) it's very light compression but definitely glues and lifts the mix from the get go.
