It's also part of 'my sound' so I don't like to mix/match all the time even if technically a different comp may more easily suit a song better, I prefer to work at my sound and keep it cohesive through a project with similar tools.įor me, having tried nearly every bus comp out there, I'm happy with how townhouse sounds and how it pulls things together without damage, it has a vibe that just works for most of the stuff I mix (indie/alt rock/pop) I prefer VCA sound on my mix bus for the gluing/cohesive pull. Vertigo is a nice alternative but doesn't get the go ahead like Townhouse does most times. I use SPL IRON (M/S mode in parallel mode at 75% mix) further down the chain in a pseudo 'mastering' capacity, along with some plugs (IK tapes, black box HG2, DBax for any overall mix eq etc) so Townhouse only plays a small but vital role in the overall sound of the mix. I'll automate the threshold to back off in the loud parts (so it doesn't compress MORE there than in the verses which will actually remove impact of the big parts), slow attack, fast release.
The way I use it (always on from the start on the mix bus) it's very light compression but definitely glues and lifts the mix from the get go.
